Tanzania is the 6th top producer of cashew nuts in the world and the second in Africa. Major cashew-growing areas in Tanzania include Mtwara, Lindi, Ruvuma, and Tanga. Mtwara and Lindi regions contribute more than 87% to the national cashew production. According to the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania, Tanzania has a substantial potential to extend production and increase the amount and add value to domestically processed cashew nuts beyond the current 10% while also making use of by-products.

Government initiatives aimed at tripling production by 2025 highlight Tanzania’s commitment to expanding its cashew sector. These efforts include supporting local processors to enhance capacity and sustainability, thereby boosting domestic processing and value addition. Tanzania’s advantageous harvest season, complemented by reduced competition from other major exporters during the same period, further enhances its market position and export potential, particularly to key markets like Vietnam and India.
Recent developments, such as plans for new processing facilities and substantial investments in agricultural inputs, underscore Tanzania’s proactive approach to capitalizing on its cashew industry’s growth prospects. With a strategic focus on increasing productivity and adding value through innovative agricultural practices, Tanzania is well-positioned to meet rising global demand and further elevate its stature in the international cashew market.
