On the other hand, Tanzania recently banned the importation of broiler chicks to protect local industries and poultry farmers.

More Tanzanians are shifting from red meat consumption to white meat consumtion for health reasons. With increased visits to ENT doctors and increased recommendations by GI doctors that people should try to reduce consumption of red meat to improve their gastro-intestinal, esophageal and pharyngeal health, more families prefer chicken and fish.

Given the three factors, i.e. shortage of local chickens, import ban of broiler chicks and , chicks hatchery is a lucrative business that will not let anyone down.

Most hatcheries and poultry breeding farms operate within residential areas without standard operating procedures. Unregistered themselves, they rarely avail of the services of registered veterinarians hence facing high mortality rates among chicks.

Tanzania livestock master plan proposes two strategies to mitigate this challenge. The strategies are:

  • Institutionalization of mandatory biosafety and HACCP procedures for poultry meat, eggs and feeds.
